Our History

1973 - The Beginning
Rod and Celia Heckathorn began repairing radio and television sets in the garage of their family home. Rod ran service calls in the evenings, often taking along one of his children for assistance. Rod and Celia expanded into appliance sales and purchased the building located at 217 Central Ave NE, Orange City (the current home of Casualty Insurance). It truly was a family run business with their son Dan planning to join. Following the tragic death of their son Dan in 1999, Rod and Celia hired a local college student named Joe Poppema to help with deliveries and service. After graduating from college, Joe began working full time for Rod and Celia May, 2000.
2002 – The Purchase
Rod and Celia approached Joe about purchasing the business fall of 2002. Joe’s love of the appliance industry and people led him to take the leap into business ownership. Joe and Gina Poppema purchased the business in November, 2002. Rod and Celia had served the Orange City area for 29 faithful years.

2009 - The Expansion
Ribbon Cutting for Joe’s TV & Appliance in our new showroom at 223 Central Ave NE, downtown Orange City. Same great business, just new location and name recognizing Joe at the helm. The new showroom has 3x the floor space. Brands were added and the business grew, but Joe remained committed to service. Two full time service technicians were added over the years, allowing Joe to stay in the store with customers.
